Lyrics for Amazing Grace
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I’m found
Was blind, but now I see
‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed
Through many dangers, toils, and snares
We have already come
‘Twas grace that brought us safe thus far
And grace will lead us home
When we’ve been there ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’ve first begun
Than when we’ve first begun

History of Amazing Grace
The song Amazing Grace is one of the most well-known and beloved hymns in the English-speaking world.
Amazing Grace was written by John Newton (1725–1807), an English poet and Anglican clergyman. The lyrics reflect Newton’s personal journey of transformation from a sinful past to redemption through God’s grace.
Newton spent some time as a sailor and was involved in the transatlantic slave trade. After surviving a violent storm at sea in 1748, Newton experienced a spiritual awakening. Though he continued in the slave trade for a few more years, he eventually renounced it and became an abolitionist.
These events laid the foundation for this hymn, which was first published in 1779 as part of Olney Hymn. This was a hymnal collection created by Newton and poet William Cowper.
